E-Systems on 60 Minutes

A blast from the past

Last Wednesday at the luncheon several of us talked about the good old days when we could not discuss anything about our work, a common affliction for many of us. This was of course before the Internet, social networks, and AI. Back in the day E-Systems was never in the news. One notable exception was a 60 Minutes segment featuring E-Systems.

The 60 Minutes Segment was based on an incident in El Paso where an E-Systems employee accidentally discharged his pistol in a El Paso hotel room room killing neighboring guest (Katrina URIBE) whom was pregnant.

The 60 Minutes segment aired on February 26, 1995 (Season 27, Episode 24). It’s still available on the Paramount CBS archives. If you don’t have a subscription we have a local copy:

The Uribe family filed a wrongful death suit. The central legal question became whether E-Systems was liable for the shooting, which hinged on proving that the E-Systems employee was acting within the “course and scope of his employment”
